How to Create a Successful Fansite

May 17th, 2007 | 5 Comments | Posted in Site Ideas

This tutorial, will show you how to create a successful fansite, for any celebrity in general… or I guess anybody else you may want to make a fansite for? Yes, but preferably a fansite for some well known actor/actoress that is, or you think will be getting a lot of hype, and searches. I’ll go through how to setup the site, what kind of content you need to have on the site, the possible revenue to be generated from various traffic levels, and some of the best ways to increase your daily/monthly/yearly earnings with the fan site.

  1. Fansites generally have great potential of making money, ads are easily optimized on them, and of course you have plenty of popular keywords that people will be clicking the search button for. With properly optimized advertisements you may even be able to make about $1-3 per 100 unique visitors. Multiply that by all the time you’ve spent into getting traffic to coming to your site, and assuming that you generated traffic effectively, you could end up making quite a bit of money. Of course fansites in my opinion aren’t going to be the type of site that brings in all kinds of money, since there is such a selective audience for the specific person your being making a site about. Traffic could be built up fast, but the maximum level of traffic is not as high as some other types of sites. A proper analogy may be. “Fansites are like cars with a very high acceleration but a low max speed.”
  2. Before purchasing hosting or anything, you are going to need to get started designing your site, or get somebody else to design your site for you. I would have referred you to my buddies at coretemplates for free templates on request, but unfortunately they had to shut down because it was too much work combined with school, but maybe one day the webjedis will be able to continue their service ey? I setup an example of a website that would be getting a pro click through rate at http://jessicaalba.webjedis.com (don’t pay attention to the poor template design, that’s not what I do). If you’ll note the bar under the main head banner, that is a great place to put a horizontal row of google list ads. Your website visitors will definitely be confused, if not tempted to click on the advertisements, thinking they are the navigation. Haha, but you’ll trick those sorry visitors and make a few cents off of them, which is all part of the master plan. I’ll leave all the design up to you, but keep in mind that you’ll want a simple… but fancy design, keeping your eye on the prize. (which is to have some content, and good ad placement, and fun… of course {~_~})
  3. Of course, as always your going to have to decide what host you are going to use, or allot a certain amount of space on your current server for this site. I’m going to say, your not going to need to much memory, and bandwidth all depends on how much traffic you intend to get for your site. Of course I’m going to suggest bluehost for paid hosting and yurx for free hosting, although paid is always better as they say ~_~. (ehhrmm, tell them bested referred you of course :)).
  4. Your going to get the best domain you could possibly think of, hopefully you’ll have your actor/actress’s name in it. That’s pretty much as far as I could go in regards to the domain name, make it something people will be searching for… jessicaalba.com, sexyalba.com, whatever right?
  5. Then of course your going to upload your site, and all of the content onto the web!  So your site’s up, and now all you need is some visitors.
  6. Now, in order to get visitors for a celebrity fan site, your going to want to go to other celebrity fan blogs, forums, and sites… and leave comments about your site!  Of course as always, on any forum you are an active member for, just put a link to your site in your signature.  Driving in a bit of direct traffic, but mainly increasing your rank in the search engines with the power of pr.  Celebrity fan sites, are also the type of sites you see a lot actually paying to advertise with google adwords, adbrite, and other companies like that.  That’s because the visitors to your site aren’t going to be all the techies, and they are likely to click on celebrity website advertisements.  So I just assume that this is an effective way to drive traffic, although i have never tried it before myself.

Work hard, and efficiently, getting all the dirt on your celebrity, and maybe some videos from tmz.com being sure to keep your site updated with all the new publicity stunts your star has made.  The publicity stunts they make to promote themselves is also going to promote your site, as people will be on the web searching for celebrity news.  An example in this case would be how people were searching ‘paris hilton’ like crazy when she was on the news getting arrested (and of course every other time).

Good luck with your fan site!

Creating a succesful forum with a specific niche

May 9th, 2007 | 2 Comments | Posted in Site Ideas

Most forums are put on the internet without ever getting much public notice at all. Of course it’s always the intention of the webmaster to get an extremely active forum, the more members, posts, and threads… the better. Forums probably have the best opportunity to make money based on ‘pay per impression’ ads. In case anybody was wondering, Google pays based on impressions and clicks. Using proper design techniques, organizing the forums and categories correctly, advertising often, building relevant back links, and occasionally offering member incentives makes a successful forum website.

Here is how it’s going to work;

  1. First, you need to decide on the correct forum software to use. As always, the free stuff is never the best… and your best off purchasing one of the popular forum softwares vBulletin, IPB (invision power board). If these $85+ softwares are not in your budget, then get the next best thing, phpbb. or smf. Of course since phpbb and smf are free, you can expect that they’re not going to be nearly as good as vB or IPB. That is my opinion, although some who have used one of the free softwares, and a paid software… actually prefer the free software!
  2. After choosing your software, your going to have to get hosting… forums usually don’t take up to much memory, but if it gets big, it has the potential to become a MAJOR bandwidth sucker. This is because of all the people on the website all the time, browsing through different threads and reading posts. So make sure you get hosting with a big bandwidth if you plan on making a big site. If not than you can even try yurx’s free hosting… but you’ll have quite a bit less space than on a paid hosting plan.
  3. So, after choosing your hosting and your software, you need to consider if you want your forum to run on your main directory (webjedis.com) or if you want it to run on a subdomain(forums.webjedis.com) , or forum directory (webjedis.com/forums). I prefer forums.webjedis.com for no particular reason. So after you have chosen, upload your software into it’s spot (Just follow the instructions given to you by your software supplier).
  4. After uploading the software, install it using the instructions given to you.
  5. Now you have a forum with no members, a default skin (template), and no cool extra stuff to keep visitors around. Depending on what software you downloaded, search for a new skin to put on your forum, or maybe even build your own. Coretemplates is a site where you could request a free forum skin to be made, otherwise you’ll have to get pre-made skins from the selected forum software’s website.
  6. Now, search for plugins, widgets, or special features that you could add to your forum… anything that you think is relevant to your forum’s theme, things you think users would like. Are you going to be displaying ads on your site? Maybe give the users an option to pay you in order to take the ads off for a month. Try Digitalpoint’s revenue share code. Whatever works!
  7. The hard part, getting members to your brand new, empty forum. This really is quite complicated, and has gotten me frustrated numerous times when I first started making forums.
  8. What internet surfers want to see, is a forum that is already quite active, has alot of members, and has a lot of information they wouldn’t want to do with out. Once you get all that, then your forum will be successful.
  1. Ask friends you’ve made on other forums, websites, Myspace, or wherever else you may have friends (god forbid they come from real life, ha ha) to come and check out your new forum. If your friends are supportive and not to busy with their own web projects, then they will most likely help you out.
  2. After inviting your friends, you need to make your forum appear active, which is best done by you and your friends posting around, and starting discussion on things that guests may take interest in.  Start up controversial posts and your guests will want a say in them (of course they won’t be able to do this without first signing up and logging in).
  3. You have to go to other forums that allow you to advertise, or have showcase sections, and post your forum up there.  Also… as always put your site link into your forum signature wherever you go, they always help getting you back links and ranking you higher in the search engines.
List of Forums to submit to coming soon
  4. Now your going to want to submit your forum to directories… a bunch of free directories, and maybe a few paid submissions will increase your pr greatly, and maybe bring in a little bit of direct traffic.                   List of Directories to submit to coming soon
  5. Now, go to site’s like Digitalpoint, and do link exchanges with other webmasters that have websites relevant to your own.  If you have money to spend, and you don’t want other people’s links all over your site, then you have the option to purchase links on other people’s sites as well.

One more thing, always remember to stay active on your forum, atleast in the early stages… it encourages your friends, and key members to stick around as well.
Making Money With the forum is another story all together, but a long story made short would be;

  • use an advertising company like google, which displays pay per impression + pay per click ads, and the more traffic you get, the more money in your pocket.

*good luck with your forums!

Making Money With Cafepress

May 9th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in Site Ideas

I’ve discovered that cafepress is probably one of the most simple and “internet noob” friendly ways to make money on the internet. With my two shops, ninja nights and the referrer, I have made more money without doing virtually any work than I have with a site I have spent hours on. (no games allowed). Of course if one really wanted to make the big bucks with site’s like cafepress, they would be spending a lot of time on promoting their shops, and affiliating with other site’s and shops. I actually made the shop ninjanights months ago and then decided to give up on cafepress since I wasn’t getting any sales, but with that specific niche and a few good descriptions on the designs, I was picked up by the search engines. My shop began to make money without me even knowing! Eventually my shop built up to the $25 minimum at the end of the month and actually surpassed it. I was sent a check for 50 something dollars, and of course after being sent a check for doing *nothing* I was stoked and now I’m making quite a bit of money off of cafepress. If you work hard on your shop, add good descriptions to your products, and affiliate with other high traffic sites, then your shop could become one of the ones that makes $xx,xxx every year.

Creating a succesful Blog Review Site

May 9th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Site Ideas

Many People write blogs specifically to make money off of their content with ppc ads all optimized and such around their blog. Don’t get me wrong, this kind of thing works , and probably will not stop working for as long as the internet exists. Now there seems to be a new way to make money blogging. This alternative to “content blogging” would be to turn your blog into a site that reviews other websites. Certain blogs charge up to about $200 dollars just to review somebodies website, which most likely only takes about 10-15 minutes. Of course the blog that is doing all the reviewing has to be quite well established before it can take off as a site review blog.

I’ve got the idea pretty simple in my head now though.
So here’s how it goes…

  1. You start a blog
  2. You build up it’s content and get known for whatever your write about
  3. submit your blog to web directories for back links (addurl) increasing your pr, and making your blog a place webmasters would want to see a link to them on.
  4. Eventually start offering review services. There are sites like Review Me which could help you out a lot.
  5. The trick is to not just completely convert your blog into a review site, then why would people want to come back? Now you have to be careful about what type of sites you review, and how often you review them. You have to review site’s that are similar to your blog’s niche (what your blog is about)

And now you have a good, sturdy blog review service!

#1 Flash Gaming Site

May 9th, 2007 | 2 Comments | Posted in Site Ideas

This has got to be the type of site I am most experienced with, I probably think this because I own the flash gaming site No Games Allowed. These type of site’s are not easily made without some sort of cms (content management system), or custom scripts. I made mine with pure html and I don’t think I’ll ever make a site like it again. It’s just way to much work for the average person to handle. I suggest buying a script, or learning php and making your own script. Site’s like addictinggames.com or heavygames.com are making the big bucks from their gaming site’s now, but it would be very hard for anybody to start a website now, and then begin to compete with addictinggames. The point is, any website has the potential to earn good sums of money, but there are just so many flash gaming sites out there these days. I seriously see them all the time, being bought, sold, or traded on various webmaster forums. Your site will have to be unique, and you’ll need to know how to advertise it.

So here’s what you do:

  1. Of course, your going to need a host. It’s always best to get payed hosting, but there are a very few free hosts that will work for this site your making. (yurx.com)
  2. We’re not doing this manually, it is way to hard and time consuming, what your going to need to do, is buy a custom content management system, specifically for flash gaming websites. An alternative to buying one of these scripts we be to take the cheap way out and try one of the various crappy free scripts out there. Like avarcade or phparcade? I’m not quite sure, they’re ok for what they are (free) but nothing works as good as a paid script.
  3. Now your going to want to use the script on your website, customize anything you need to to make your site look good. Here is a list of things users like to see in a flash gaming site.
  • Games On the front page: Games have to be close, it helps so visitors don’t stray away from your page before they even get to the games.
  • Bright Colors: People have always said that dark colors on a flash gaming website don’t really compliment the site, it should be bright, cheery, and fun like the games on the site.
  • No pop ups: Ok, so this is something that may stump you, since most of the big flash gaming site’s have popups, why shouldn’t you? Addictinggames, Heavygames, and any of those other sites that have popups, only have them because they are established… I assure you that any new gaming site that comes up will not get away with having pop up ads. They are a nuisance and they keep visitors away from your site.
  • No Complications: Gaming sites with unnecessary complications just mean more work for you, don’t go and add a forum, or a blog… people are not going to participate in the forum, or read your damn blog on a gaming site. All they want to do is play the games, and that’s just what they’ll do!
  • Unique Feature(s): There are a bunch of flash gaming site’s out there with the same script, and absolutely nothing unique about them! You want your site to be the one people go back to instead of those other generic sites, so give it some special feature, or features.
  • Search Box: People want to be able to find the games they’re looking for, and having a search box will definitely help them with that.
  • Descriptions and Text: Without any descriptions or text on your site, there’s not much for the search engines to index in their systems. So make sure you describe all of your games, and whatever other content you have on your website.

4. Ok, so back to business, after your site is all designed and optimized for your visitors to enjoy, your going to want to upload some game packs to your site, which you can find for free all over the internet. just search for “free game packs”
5. Now put your ads around the site where you think is best, make sure you have your ads in frames if they are anywhere near your media. I think it is against certain ad networks terms of service to have ads out of frame near the media.
6. Submit your site to directories, advertise on forums, do link exchange, whatever you have to, to bring internet browsers to your site to play games!
7. You can’t just stop their though, you have to continually advertise, and update your site with new gamepacks, so people don’t get bored… and they keep coming back.

Other than that, your in the clean with your new flash gaming website!
